Please help! I'm sure i'm missing something simple, template mods

So I'm trying to mod the header template.

I'm working with the default one.

I'm trying to change the top nav bar for when a user isn't logged in.

When I change it the text just goes away there are still links.

I'm using dreamweaver.

I get html basics, and from that stand point I'm like WTF. I know it's calling other things CSS, which I've looked and and can't figure out that, the CSS is causing an issue.

I guess I just need to know if I'm changing the header were else do i have to look, to change things so everything works together.
